Background information Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is a joint venture founded in 2006 between Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the UK. It was the first university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. The university has grown steadily and there are currently more than 17,000 enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students. Of these, 10,000 are studying at our campus in Suzhou, China and 3,500 are studying at the University of Liverpool as part of a ‘2+2’ articulation route.

The department of mathematics consists of 4 academic divisions (applied mathematics, pure mathematics,Financial, Statistics and Actuarial Science, and Physics) and a learning and teaching division. The department has more than 80 staff members from 12 countries and 2843 registered undergraduate students and 30 master degree students and 20 PhD students, of which 1979 UG students reside in Suzhou, and 861 UG students reside in Liverpool UK. In the last 12 years, about one thirds of its undergraduates have entered into TOP 10 Universities (in the QS ranking) for further study, and about 70% UG students have entered into Top 100 Universities for further study.

The XJTLU campus is in the city of Suzhou, China, and forms part of the Dushu Lake Higher Education Town in the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). Just 24 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed rail, Suzhou is well-connected to other major cities in China. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals and the UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens attracting millions of tourists each year. The SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views day and night, and there are a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, and entertainment hubs.
Competitive salary ranges will match the ranks and experiences. In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses.
Overseas staff receive education allowances for their children. Overseas staff may receive a tax-free entitlement of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.

Our partner institute, Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) is one of the top universities in China.
SJTU ranked 37th globally in the 2019 US NEWs ranking, and 42nd in the 2019 QS ranking for mathematical sciences. The School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) (
http://math.sjtu.edu.cn) has been included in the project “Network of International Centers of Education in China” (three in total nationwide), which facilitates its development in internationalization. The Institute of Natural Sciences (http://ins.sjtu.edu.cn) was officially established in 2010. Characterized by its interdisciplinary scientific research, INS is aimed at breaking down the traditional barriers of individual disciplines by setting an unprecedented standard for creating a first-rate research environment ideally conducive for creative scientific research, and at becoming a world-class research center for exchange of innovative scientific ideas, original interdisciplinary research, and rigorous training of versatile cross-disciplinary scientists and also an intellectual center for world-class interdisciplinary studies.
