Biography

Professor Luis Caffarelli currently holds the Sid Richardson Chair at the University of Texas at Austin.
He also has been a professor at the University of Minnesota, the University of Chicago, and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He was a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1986 to 1996.

Professor Caffarelli is a luminary in the field of nonlinear partial differential equations and their applications including creating a theory of regularity for nonlinear equations such as the Monge–Ampère equation, and free-boundary problems such as the obstacle problem. He has received many prizes and awards among which include  the Bôcher Memorial Prize in 1984,   the Diamond Konex Award granted by Konex Foundation from Argentina  in 2003,  Rolf Schock Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2005,  the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Mathematics in 2009, the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 2012 and the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2018.  He is a Fellow of the AMS, SIAM, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
