据美国家自然科学基金会资助的数学科学研究所新闻报道（NSF Math Institutes create new jobs），为应对金融危机造成的失业状况，美国家自然科学基金会资助的七个数学研究所为新博士增设45个1－2年的职位，以使得他们可以在社区学院或者其他高等教育机构教书，或者参与商业和工业有关的项目。超过七百个博士申请了这45个职位，其中大约400个是今年获得博士学位的。这七个美国家自然科学基金会资助的数学研究所是：

1. the American Institute of Mathematics,
2. the Institute for Advanced Study,
3. the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications,
4. the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics,
5. the Mathematical Biosciences Institute,
6. the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute,
7. the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute.

除了上述45个新增的职位，在2008年底美国家自然科学基金会还颁发了41个博士后奖学金（英文报道：NSF Postdoctoral Fellowships Awarded）。
