Red blood cells (RBCs) are very important due to their role of oxygen transport from lungs. As the malaria parasite grows in the malaria-infected red blood cells (IRBCs), the properties of the cells change. In the present work, the oxygen uptake by RBCs and IRBCs at the pulmonary capillaries is simulated using a numerical technique based on the two-dimensional immersed interface method. The results for the oxygen uptake by a stationary single RBC have fair agreements with the previously reported results. The numerical results show that the malaria infection could significantly cause deterioration on the oxygen uptake by red blood cells. The results also suggest that the oxygen uptake by individual stationary RBC/IRBC would not be significantly affected by the neighboring cells provided the separation distance is about the dimension of the cell. Furthermore, it appears that the oxygen uptake by both RBCs and IRBCs is dominated by mass diffusion over the convection although the Peclet number is of the order of unity.

Numerical simulations of unsteady gas flows are studied on the basis of Gas-Kinetic Unified Algorithm (GKUA) from rarefied transition to continuum flow regimes. Several typical examples are adopted. An unsteady flow solver is developed by solving the Boltzmann model equations, including the Shakhov model and the Rykov model etc. The Rykov kinetic equation involving the effect of rotational energy can be transformed into two kinetic governing equations with inelastic and elastic collisions by integrating the molecular velocity distribution function with the weight factor on the energy of rotational motion. Then, the reduced velocity distribution functions are devised to further simplify the governing equation for one- and two-dimensional flows. The simultaneous equations are numerically solved by the discrete velocity ordinate (DVO) method in velocity space and the finite-difference schemes in physical space. The time-explicit operator-splitting scheme is constructed, and numerical stability conditions to ascertain the time step are discussed. As the application of the newly developed GKUA, several unsteady varying processes of one- and two-dimensional flows with different Knudsen number are simulated, and the unsteady transport phenomena and rarefied effects are revealed and analyzed. It is validated that the GKUA solver is competent for simulations of unsteady gas dynamics covering various flow regimes.

This study investigates the applicability of the singular boundary method (SBM), a recent developed meshless boundary collocation method, for the analysis of two-dimensional (2D) thin structural problems. The troublesome nearly-singular kernels, which are crucial in the applications of SBM to thin shapes, are dealt with efficiently by using a non-linear transformation technique. Promising SBM results with only a small number of boundary nodes are obtained for thin structures with the thickness-to-length ratio is as small as 1E-9, which is sufficient for modeling most thin layered coating systems as used in smart materials and micro-electro-mechanical systems. The advantages, disadvantages and potential applications of the proposed method, as compared with the finite element (FEM) and boundary element methods (BEM), are also discussed.

In this paper, a high-accuracy $H^1$-Galerkin mixed finite element method (MFEM) for strongly damped wave equation is studied by linear triangular finite element. By constructing a suitable extrapolation scheme, the convergence rates can be improved from $\mathcal{O}(h)$ to $\mathcal{O}(h^3)$ both for the original variable $u$ in $H^1(Ω)$ norm and for the actual stress variable $\boldsymbol{P}=∇u_t$ in $H$(div;$Ω$) norm, respectively. Finally, numerical results are presented to confirm the validity of the theoretical analysis and excellent performance of the proposed method.

In this paper, we present numerical computational methods for solving the fracture problem in brittle and ductile materials with no prior knowledge of the topology of crack path. Moreover, these methods are capable of modeling the crack initiation. We perform numerical simulations of pieces of brittle material based on global approach and taken into account the thermal effect in crack propagation. On the other hand, we also propose a numerical method for solving the fracture problem in a ductile material based on elements deletion method and also using thermo-mechanical behavior and damage laws. In order to achieve the last purpose, we simulate the orthogonal cutting process.

This article summaries a numerical study of thermo-solutal natural convection in a square cavity filled with anisotropic porous medium. The side walls of the cavity are maintained at constant temperatures and concentrations, whereas bottom wall is a function of non-uniform (sinusoidal) temperature and concentration. The non-Darcy Brinkmann model is considered. The governing equations are solved numerically by spectral element method using the vorticity-stream-function approach. The controlling parameters for present study are Darcy number $(Da)$, heat source intensity i.e., thermal Rayleigh number $(Ra)$, permeability ratio $(K^∗)$, orientation angle $(ϕ)$. The main attention is given to understand the impact of anisotropy parameters on average rates of heat transfer (bottom, $Nu_b$, side $Nu_s$) and mass transfer (bottom, $Sh_b$, side, $Sh_s$) as well as on streamlines, isotherms and iso-concentration. Numerical results show that, for irrespective value of $K^∗$, the heat and mass transfer rates are negligible for $10^{-7}≤Da≤10^{−5}, Ra=2×10^5$ and $ϕ=45^◦$. However, a significant impact appears on Nusselt and Sherwood numbers when Da lies between $10^{−5}$ to $10^{−4}$. The maximum bottom heat and mass transfer rates ($Nu_b, Su_b$) is attained at $ϕ=45^◦$, when $K^∗= $0.5 and 2.0. Furthermore, both heat and mass transfer rates increase on increasing Rayleigh number ($Ra$) for all the values of $K^∗$. Overall, It is concluded from the above study that due to anisotropic permeability the flow dynamics becomes complex.

Another form of the discrete mKdV hierarchy with self-consistent sources is given in the paper. The self-consistent sources are presented only by the eigenfunctions corresponding to the reduction of the Ablowitz-Ladik spectral problem. The exact soliton solutions are also derived by the inverse scattering transform.

In this paper, the nonlinear boundary value problem (BVP) for the Jeffery-Hamel flow equations taking into consideration the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) effects is solved by using the modified Adomian decomposition method. We first transform the original two-dimensional MHD Jeffery-Hamel problem into an equivalent third-order BVP, then solve by the modified Adomian decomposition method for analytical approximations. Ultimately, the effects of Reynolds number and Hartmann number are discussed.
