In this paper we study a numerical method for the simulation of free surface flows of viscoplastic (Herschel-Bulkley) fluids. The approach is based on the level set method for capturing the free surface evolution and on locally refined and dynamically adapted octree cartesian staggered grids for the discretization of fluid and level set equations. A regularized model is applied to handle the non-differentiability of the constitutive relations. We consider an extension of the stable approximation of the Newtonian flow equations on staggered grid to approximate the viscoplastic model and level-set equations if the free boundary evolves and the mesh is dynamically refined or coarsened. The numerical method is first validated for a Newtonian case. In this case, the convergence of numerical solutions is observed towards experimental data when the mesh is refined. Further we compute several 3D viscoplastic Herschel-Bulkley fluid flows over incline planes for the dam-break problem. The qualitative comparison of numerical solutions is done versus experimental investigations. Another numerical example is given by computing the freely oscillating viscoplastic droplet, where the motion of fluid is driven by the surface tension forces. Altogether the considered techniques and algorithms (the level-set method, compact discretizations on dynamically adapted octree cartesian grids, regularization, and the surface tension forces approximation) result in efficient approach to modeling viscoplastic free-surface flows in possibly complex 3D geometries.

In this paper, three versions of WENO schemes WENO-JS, WENO-M and WENO-Z are used for one-dimensional detonation wave simulations with fifth order characteristic based spatial flux reconstruction. Numerical schemes for solving the system of hyperbolic conversation laws using the ZND analytical solution as initial condition are presented. Numerical simulations of one-dimensional detonation wave for both stable and unstable cases are performed. In the stable case with overdrive factor $f=1.8$, the temporal histories of peak pressure of the detonation front computed by WENO-JS and WENO-Z reach the theoretical steady state. In comparison, the temporal history of peak pressure computed by the WENO-M scheme fails to reach and oscillates around the theoretical steady state. In the unstable cases with overdrive factors $f=1.6$ and $f=1.3$, the results of all WENO schemes agree well with each other as the resolution, defined as the number of grid points per half-length of reaction zone, increases. Furthermore, for overdrive factor $f=1.6$, the grid convergence study demonstrates that the high order WENO schemes converge faster than other existing lower order schemes such as unsplit scheme, Roe's solver with minmod limiter and Roe's solver with superbee limiter in reaching the predicted peak pressure. For overdrive factor $f=1.3$, the temporal history of peak pressure shows an increasingly chaotic behavior even at high resolution.  In the case of overdrive factor $f=1.1$, in accordance with theoretical studies, an explosion occurs and different WENO schemes leading to this explosion appear at slightly different times.

In an early approach, a kinetic model with multiple translational temperature [K. Xu, H. Liu and J. Jiang, Phys. Fluids 19, 016101 (2007)] to simulate non-equilibrium flows was proposed. In this paper, instead of using three temperatures in the $x$, $y$ and $z$-directions, we define the translational temperature as a second-order symmetric tensor. Under the new framework, the differences between the temperature tensor and the pressure tensor will be explicitly pointed out. Based on a multiple stage BGK-type collision model and the Chapman-Enskog expansion, the corresponding macroscopic gas dynamics equations in three-dimensional space will be derived. The zeroth-order expansion gives 10 moment closure equations similar to that of Levermore [C.D. Levermore, J. Stat. Phys 83, pp.1021 (1996)]. The derived gas dynamic equations can be considered as a regularization of the 10 moments equations in the first-order expansion. The new gas dynamic equations have the same structure as the Navier-Stokes equations, but the stress-strain relationship in the Navier-Stokes equations is replaced by an algebraic equation with temperature differences. At the same time, the heat flux, which is absent in Levermore's 10 moment closure, is recovered. As a result, both the viscous and the heat conduction terms are unified under a single anisotropic temperature concept. In the continuum flow regime, the new gas dynamic equations automatically recover the standard Navier-Stokes equations. Our gas dynamic equations are natural extensions of the Navier-Stokes equations to the near continuum flow regime and can be used for microflow computations. Two examples, the force-driven Poiseuille flow and the Couette flow in the transition flow regime, are used to validate the model. Both analytical and numerical results are presented. Theoretically, the Boltzmann equation can be also applied to the current multiple stage gas evolution model to derive generalized macroscopic governing equations in the near continuum flow regime. Instead of using Maxwellian as an expansion point in the Chapman-Enskog method, the multiple temperature Gaussian can be used as an expansion point as well.

We extend the traditional kinetic scheme for ideal gases to the Euler equations with the equation of state for a multi-component stiffened gas. Based on a careful analysis of the oscillation mechanism of the traditional kinetic scheme across contact discontinuities, we propose a new non-oscillatory kinetic (NOK) scheme for multi-component stiffened gases. The basic idea in the construction is to use a flux splitting technique to construct numerical fluxes which do not depend on the concrete form of the equilibrium state. The new scheme not only can avoid spurious oscillations of the pressure and velocity near a material interface which are observed in the traditional kinetic schemes such as the kinetic flux vector splitting (KFVS) and BGK schemes, but also can deal with the stiffened gas equation of state. Moreover, we also carry out a careful analysis on the consistency condition, truncation error and positivity of the NOK scheme. A number of 1D and 2D numerical tests are presented which demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the new scheme in the simulation of problems with smooth, weak and strong shock wave regions.

Based on an asymptotic expansion of (bi)linear finite elements, a new extrapolation formula and extrapolation cascadic multigrid method (EXCMG) are proposed. The key ingredients of the proposed methods are some new extrapolations and quadratic interpolations, which are used to provide better initial values on the refined grid. In the case of triple grids, the errors of the new initial values are analyzed in detail. The numerical experiments show that EXCMG has higher accuracy and efficiency.

A spectral collocation method is proposed to solve Volterra or Fredholm integral equations with weakly singular kernels and corresponding integro-differential equations by virtue of some identities. For a class of functions that satisfy certain regularity conditions on a bounded domain, we obtain geometric or supergeometric convergence rate for both types of equations. Numerical results confirm our theoretical analysis.
