Conference Theme:
There has been significant progress in scientific computing,particularly in the diverse fields of multiscale computations and imaging.One of the focusses of multiscale computation concentrates on problems where classical single physics models are either inadequate or not accurate enough,and a coupling of multiple physics models needs to be considered.In particular,there is an emergence of methods that replace heuristics and empirical observations in coarse scale single physics models by direct numerical simulations of more accurate models defined on finer scales.PDE-based techniques for imaging received a lot of attention due to its success in removing noise and segmenting salient features in images. Many of the approaches are closely related to inverse problems and interface problems.
On the other hand,many of the important results have been driven by the need to separate features of different length scales. The field of high frequency wave propagation, for instance, is to compute effective wave behavior at length scales that are much large than the wavelength.It is vital for telecommunication,radar and seismic imaging. Novel and robustmethods have been introduced and advanced in recent years. Phase-spaced methods enable efficient computation of multivalued solutions that are previous too complicated to compute.
From computational techniques view point: the level set method made impact on a diversity of applications including free interface problems and a number of inverse problems that involve complicated shapes and topology; the discontinuous Galerkin methods provide possibility of high order accuracy and adaptivity in solving hyperbolic problems and can be applied to a wide range of problems including ones alluded above. Even though these fields appear to be diverse and have different concerns for the respective applications,they share common objectives and difficulties at a higher level, and may benefit from closer interactions among the engaging scientists.
This workshop brings some of the world's leading experts in these fields together and aims at
1) providing an opportunity for direct communication and exchange of ideas;
2) promoting interaction and collaboration of local and international scholars.
