罗伯特，昵称Bob，因老年痴呆症并发肺炎于2020年4月28日在英国牛津养老院离世，享年84岁。
2020年9月24日，美国生态学会会刊（Bulletin of the
Ecological Society of America）在线发表了普林斯顿大学几位生态学家的纪念文章，开篇赞评便说:“如果能够拥有一个精彩的职业人生，我们绝大多数人都会感到无比荣幸，而Bob至少有五个。”
